Wag of the Valley

I am a big fan of Valleywag. Most of the time I just skim through the head lines and not really read anything. It is a quick and humorous way to get the news for the Valley.

Anyway, this caught my eye today, “Julia Allison breaks up with her nerd boyfriend”.

To summarize the post, she was dumped by her nerd Silicon Valley founder boyfriend via email.

Instantly, I felt bad for Julia, even though I had no idea who she was. I headed over to her detailed blog about the break up.

If I was him, I would dump her too. Dumping someone over email is uncuth, but I really can’t find any sympathy for her. For one thing, her email was totally passive aggressive and needy. And posting private communications between 2 people (I am sure she didn’t ask him if she could do it) is just wrong.

I think his email to him if taken out of context it could be quite bad, but if you read the series as a whole she came out like a ‘tard.

I am not posting link to her blog because I think her writing (from the snippet I read in the post) is some awful dreck. And I thought I am the narcissist by consistently talking about myself in my blog.

Maybe I am the ‘tard for wasting my time talking about this instead of doing something useful like watching TV.

Foca, the Seal

Last week, as we were doing our usual Morning check ins, one of the developers asked everyone to stay a bit longer because he want to say something to the QA team.

I looked around and thought to myself, oh gawd, what’s going on?

He pulls out a bag, and pulled this out.

Foca, the Seal

He wanted to thank the QA team for finding bugs and what not during the release.

He called it the QA’s ‘Seal of Approval.’ It’s hard to tell from the photo, but it’s a seal wearing a blue cape with a red check on it, hence the seal of approval.

I don’t know about how other people on the team felt, but I was touched. I personally don’t really care much for public appreciation. The best appreciation is everything is done as explained, release goes well, and issues found are issues no one thought about before the release.

But I must admit, sometimes it is quite nice to have people say nice things about the team. :) I guess I am easily amused.

I suggested the name Foca, but no one likes it. I heard someone calls him/her Clubbie, but I don’t know. Maybe Orca, it’s a better sounding name and rhymes with Foca.

On the way to the office today…

On the way from the parking garage to the office today, I saw this on the bench.

Party

It’s hard to tell from the picture, but the bottle is a bottle of Tums.

Makes me wonder, was this person in a good party or in a eating contest? Either way, judging from the heart burn meds, he/she must had a good time.

Camera Obscura

In my 3rd start up (really 2nd start up since I was only in my 1 start up for 3 month, but that’s another story for another time.), we had an conference room name Camera Obscura. For some reason, I always thought it was a super cool name and it rhymes!

Well, this post has nothing to do with Camera Obscura. So if you want to learn more about it, you can find it here. But you won’t learn it here.

I don’t really think about that particular start up anymore, for one thing, it no longer exist. (No, it didn’t go bust, it was acquired.) I do talk to my ex-boss and coworkers every now and then, to get some company gossip.

So today, I wore that particular company’s jacket today. Usually, no one ever comments on it. When I tell people I worked for that company, people would say what’s that? What do they do? Never heard of them, etc. And I would have to go into my story about how the company invented camera phones, etc.

So imagine my delight (surprise) when someone at Ning actually knew what that company did. It’s kind of funny, her ex company was working on a deal with my ex company. The deal didn’t go through, but she remain in contact with some of the people.

So random.
